Summer nights can be uncomfortably hot, making restful sleep difficult—especially for infants. Their immature thermoregulatory system makes them more susceptible to overheating, which affects not only sleep quality but also health. So how can you ensure your little one's safe, comfortable sleep in hot weather? Learn natural ways and proven tips that will help your child sleep soundly, even on hot nights.

The right sleeping temperature for your baby

The ideal temperature for a baby's sleep is 18–20°C, but it can be difficult to maintain this temperature in hot weather. Air the room in the morning and evening, use insulating curtains, and if you're using a fan, point it away from the baby. You can also hang a wet towel in the room – it will help lower the temperature and humidify the air.

Natural bedding and pajamas

Dressing a baby for sleep in the summer can be a challenge. Sometimes, a onesie or a cloth diaper is enough as a cover. Choose natural fabrics – cotton, bamboo, or muslin are breathable and gentle on baby's skin. Avoid synthetic fabrics, which trap heat and sweat.

Cooling bath before bed

A lukewarm bath in lukewarm (but not cold!) water is soothing and helps lower your baby's body temperature. You can add chamomile or lavender infusion to the water – they have calming properties and soothe skin irritations. This is a great way to prepare your little one for sleep.

  • ...newborns and infants lose heat primarily through their heads! Therefore, it's not recommended to wear hats to sleep in the summer – they can lead to overheating and excessive sweating.

Beware of overheating

Babies can't yet effectively regulate their body temperature. Avoid covering them with thick blankets or overheating them for fear of hypothermia. Check the baby's neck – it should be warm but not sweaty. Cold hands or feet don't mean your baby is cold!

Safe Falling Asleep – SIDS Rules in Summer

In summer, as at any time of year, it's important to follow safe sleep practices. Babies should sleep on their backs, on a firm mattress, without pillows or stuffed animals. Overheating increases the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), so appropriate temperature and light bedding are crucial.

In summer, children can be restless due to the heat. Besides bathing, natural calming methods are helpful: white noise, gentle massages with natural oils (e.g., almond oil), and calming bedtime rituals, such as soft music or reading a book. A consistent daily routine gives children a sense of security.

Research withTextile Research Journal(2020) proved that natural fabrics (e.g. cotton, bamboo) wick away moisture much better and support the thermoregulation of the baby's skin.

W jakiej temperaturze powinno spać niemowlę latem?

Optymalna temperatura to 18–20°C, choć w czasie upałów trudno ją osiągnąć. Warto stosować wietrzenie i lekkie, przewiewne ubrania.

Czy dziecko powinno spać w piżamce, jeśli jest gorąco?

W bardzo ciepłe noce wystarczy body lub pieluszka. Najważniejsze, by ubranko było z naturalnych, oddychających materiałów.

Jak rozpoznać, czy niemowlę jest przegrzane?

Sprawdź kark – jeśli jest spocony lub gorący, dziecko może być przegrzane. Zimne rączki nie są powodem do niepokoju.
